Giro (Turn) - Escuela Santuario

Giro: qué sueños mueven tu cuerpo? is a mobile library-workshop enabling conversations and book creation inspired by the ‘movimiento cartonero’ (cardboard movement), a 20+ year old tradition in Latin America.

The installation was part of the exhibition "Escuela Santuario" (Flushing Town Hall, Queens, NY) that presented the work created by children from the Immigration Clinic at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge. Part of Flushing Town Hall's Gallery was transformed into an art-making space called Laboratorio Santuario. At "Giro: que sueños mueven tu cuerpo?", visitors were invited to imagine and assemble books with cardboard covers and blank sheets, from start to finish, in their own time, using pencils, crayons, and glue. Alternatively, one could create standalone pages that will be shared and composed with other people’s work. For those who just want to look, a small library is available, featuring books that inspire dreams and movement.

“Which dreams move your body?” is the question-invitation to the installed space, composed by a few simple examples and guidelines. The installation can be featured as a standalone project or as part of a larger exhibition (eg: an art exhibition, a book fair, a workshop).
